3 Tips to Try If Your Students Are Not Engaged

Updated: Nov 3, 2020

Do you have a child that isn’t interested or engaged in what you’re trying to teach? You planned what you thought would be the best lesson, but they are just not having it? Trust me, this is normal! Here are 3 things you can try to fix this problem:

1. Start with what they like to do and incorporate it into what you are teaching. Maybe your son loves to play basketball but hates writing. Try taking him outside to play basketball and then write about how you played basketball with him or he can write about his favorite game he attended. Say your daughter loves crafting but despises math. Show her how she can incorporate math into crafting. Create a math problem around a craft or maybe measure pieces of paper to prepare for the craft.

2. Try different ways to start a lesson. Perhaps you show a video about what you are about to teach, read an interesting excerpt, or tell a story. Reel them in and then introduce the topic.

3. Take frequent breaks. This is a good tactic for you and your child! Work for 10-30 minutes (depending on the age of your child), then take a 5-10 minute break.
