How often should we give choices to our students? Choices can be a powerful tool in keeping our children motivated and help them feel like they have a part of their learning and everyday lives.
Here are some ways we can give choices to our students:
✨Let them choose what subject/activity they’d like to do next. For instance, you know that you need to get math and writing done, but your student could choose which to complete first.
✨Ask if they would like to write about a topic or create an art project about the same topic. Of course this is depending on the topic/subject but children learn in different ways and it’s important to foster the way they learn.
✨Choice board - you could offer a choice board for your children. A choice board is basically a sheet of 6 or 9 squares (depending on the age) and children have to complete at least one or two activities ( or however many you’d like) from the choice board. For example, say you want to have your child practice vocabulary words. The choice board would have options such as write the words and definitions, or draw the words, or write sentences to include the words. The options for the choice boards are endless. There are many examples online and I will post some in my free resources on my website.
It’s important for children to feel like they have a say in what they do.
